The national forensic laboratory is not an institute beside the police. It is one department of the national criminal investigation unit, which is itself subordinate to the police directorate — and that unit holds prosecuting authority of its own.

Norway does not place its police forensic work in a separate institute. Kripos describes itself as "den nasjonale enhet for bekjempelse av organisert og annen alvorlig kriminalitet" — the national unit for combating organised and other serious crime — and states that it "ble etablert i 1959 og fikk påtalemyndighet i 2005", and that it is "underlagt Politidirektoratet". So the body is a national police unit under the police directorate, and it acquired prosecuting authority forty-six years after it was set up.

The forensic function is one of several national roles the same unit holds. Kripos lists itself as "nasjonalt kompetansesenter for norsk politi", "nasjonalt kriminalteknisk laboratorium", "nasjonalt kontakt- og koordineringspunkt for internasjonalt politisamarbeid", "nasjonal etterretningsproduksjonsansvarlig", "nasjonalt cyberkrimsenter (NC3)" and "behandlingsansvarlig for sentrale registre i politiet". The national forensic laboratory is therefore a ROLE OF THE UNIT rather than a separate organisation with its own name in the structure.

What this does not settle is how the work is divided. Nothing read says what the district police forces do for themselves, whether any examination is performed outside Kripos, or how a court-appointed or defence examination is obtained. Forensic medicine is not mentioned on either page and is not described here — a medico-legal service is a different thing from a police forensic laboratory, and nothing read establishes where Norway places it.
