Police recruitment in the Netherlands
Entry is admission to a police education programme rather than application to a job, and the choice of programme — including one leading directly into investigation — is made at the point of entry.

AnalysisThe Dutch route inverts the shape most systems use. Rather than applying for a post and being trained afterwards, a candidate is admitted to a named education programme, and the programme determines the kind of police work the person is being prepared for.
Six entry programmes are published: the politieopleiding at mbo 4-niveau lasting two years, and four three-year hbo bachelors — bachelor Politiekunde Politieagent, bachelor Politiekunde Wijkagent, bachelor Rechercheur and bachelor Politieleider.
- Nationality
- Dutch nationality is required at the start of the selection procedure, and the official wording allows for it being held alongside another: "je de Nederlandse nationaliteit moet hebben. Dit mag ook je tweede nationaliteit zijn." This is a genuine nationality requirement, unlike systems that ask only for a right to work.
- Age
- A minimum age of 18 at the start of a police programme. No maximum was stated by the source consulted, and none is inferred here.
- Prior education
- A vmbo-tl/gl, mbo-3 or mbo-4 diploma, or a transfer certificate to 4 havo/vwo. A candidate without one of those may instead sit a toelatingstoets — so the qualification is a route in, not the only route in.
- Language
- Dutch at level B1 or above, in both written and spoken form. The level is specified rather than left to judgement.
- Driving licence
- A category B licence for a manual car, required within nine months after the training starts rather than before applying.
Admission also considers mental and physical fitness, medical requirements, integrity and reliability, and neutrality. The official material lists these as areas of assessment; it is not reproduced here as criteria, and no standard is stated.
Teaching is split between the Politieacademie and the region where the student is posted: the two-year mbo-4 route is taught at a Politieacademie location with practical lessons in the region of posting.
