Policing in Italy is a national function, and — unusually — it is shared among several national police forces. Law 121 of 1981 (Article 16) lists, alongside the Polizia di Stato (the civilian State Police), "the Arma dei Carabinieri, as an armed force in permanent service of public security" and "the Corps of the Guardia di Finanza". These forces are coordinated centrally by the Department of Public Security of the Ministry of the Interior.
