What it is
The committee describes itself as the external oversight body for the police services, and publishes its name in Dutch, French, German and English. It belongs in this corpus for the same reason Japan’s National Public Safety Commission and Finland’s National Police Board do: some of the most consequential institutions in a policing system do not police. Treating an oversight body as a police force, or leaving it out because it is not one, both misdescribe how the system is actually governed.
What it covers
The Belgian police services, federal and local, as the subject of its oversight rather than a territory it polices.
Broad responsibilities
- External oversight of the police services
- Handling of complaints about police services
- Investigation of the functioning of the police services
Who it answers to
The page read does not state the committee’s governing statute or the body it reports to, and neither is claimed here.

SCOPE: the Belgian Comité P only. The committee's own site, read directly. Supports the body's names in Dutch, French, German and English as the site itself presents them, and its own statement that it is the external oversight body for the police services. The site does not state the committee's governing statute on the page read, and none is claimed here. Establishes nothing about the Belgian federal or local police.
