Forensic Science and Identification Services is, on the force’s own account, "an integral part of National Police Services, with a mandate to provide quality investigative support services for frontline policing". It provides forensic science services, crime scene forensic identification, fingerprint identification and criminal record repositories, and the National DNA Data Bank.
The laboratory arm is narrower and more precisely stated. National Forensic Laboratory Services "provides forensic services in biology, firearms, toxicology and trace evidence" — four named disciplines — "for police from across Canada, excluding Ontario and Quebec who have their own public forensic laboratories for provincial and municipal investigations". It "operates as a single public laboratory system with 3 sites located in Ottawa, Edmonton and Surrey".

The institutional fact is the placement: this forensic service is INSIDE the national police force, which is the arrangement five of the first six countries published on this platform do not have. It establishes nothing about accreditation, nothing about what any technique can show, and nothing about the provincial laboratories.
