Six banded officer ranks from constable to chief superintendent, with the three chief-officer ranks held separately — and a first pay step that arrives after one year rather than on promotion.
What ranks does Police Scotland have?
Police Scotland’s own pay and grading structure bands six officer ranks — Constable, Sergeant, Inspector, Chief Inspector, Superintendent and Chief Superintendent — and lists Chief Constable, Deputy Chief Constables and Assistant Chief Constables separately as executive-level posts. The separation is worth noticing: the chief-officer ranks are not simply the top of the same table, which is a common arrangement in British policing and is not how every service organises itself.
