Why the role exists

Courts need physical material interpreted by someone competent to say what it does and does not establish. The value of the role lies as much in stating limits as in stating conclusions, because an overstated forensic conclusion is very difficult for a court to correct.

  • That absence of a finding means nothing happened. Material may never have been present, recoverable, or examined.
